"The inaugural game of the South Arkansas Showdown series between Bearden and Junction City was won last season by the Bears 35 to 8 in Junction City to claim the 15 lb. crystal and glass hardware as their prize.
Now the Bears must defend the hardware this season October 7, 2011 at Rogers Field in Bearden against a hungry bunch of Dragons out to revenge 2 loses to the Bears in 2010. Only the regular season game counted toward the trophy changing hands, but nonetheless Junction City and Coach Carpenter will be out to prove that they are a much better team than in 2010.
Sadly for the Bears, coach Mike Cox will not be on the sidelines as he resigned to take over the Hamburg Lions football program. We all wish coach Cox the best in his new endeavor, and now coach Ernie Horstkamp is the head Bear and vows to continue coach Cox's success.
Bearden and Junction City will enter this season's game deadlocked with an overall series record of 22-22-2 according to Bearden Bear's historian Jackie Bevill. This record speaks for itself that Bearden/Junction City is one of the best high school football rivalry series in the state of Arkansas.
The trophy itself is donated by Calvin B. Tidwell, Sr., a 1989 graduate of Bearden High School and was created by Crown Awards, Inc. of Brooklyn, NY. and without a doubt it is one of the most unique and beautiful rivalry trophies in the country.
Good luck to the Bears and Dragons!.."
